North Otago vs Wairapapa Bush Review

Masterton:  A dedicated defence and a magical four minutes of rugby late in the first half was counter balanced by the inability to string together three or more phases in the second half which saw North Otago struggle to a bonus point 29-20 victory over Wairarapa-Bush on Saturday.  North Otago won the toss and elected to play into the gusty south westerly and had to absorb territorial and possession pressure.  The pressure saw North Otago conceded penalties in the eighth and 16th minutes and former North Otago first five eighth, Jamie Te Huia, gave the home side a 6-0 lead which it retained until the 29th minute when North Otago second five eighth and captain, Luke Herden broke the defensive line on halfway and then broke four further tackles as he raced 40 metres to score for Ben Patston to convert.  Patston suffered an ankle injury early in the half and was replaced at halftime.

North Otago vs Wairarapa Bush Review

North Otago goes into this afternoon’s match against Wairarapa-Bush safe in the knowledge that it has made the Meads Cup playoffs but aware that a convincing five bonus point victory would give it a place in the top three of the Meads Cup which would entitle it to two home games and one away game in the lead up to the semi finals.

But Memorial Park, Masterton has not been a safe haven for North Otago sides.  It is interesting to note that the two Unions have met only ten times since the inception of the NPC with North Otago winning six and Wairarapa-Bush, four, but three of those four Wairarapa-Bush wins occurred in Masterton.

North Otago vs Poverty Bay Roundup

North Otago produced one of its finest performances over the past decade when it completely dominated the hitherto unbeaten Poverty Bay side scoring five tries to one in its comprehensive 40-8 win at Whitestone Contracting Stadium on Saturday.  This exhibition would rate with the 2002 Third Division title, the 2007 Meads Cup final and the 2005 semi final against Hawkes Bay, when North Otago scored the only try of the game but was denied victory through the lack of a video referee in its 11-15 loss.
