North Otago Sports Review
In a closely fought contest Old Boys held off Excelsior for a 26-25 win in the fourth round of Citizens shield rugby played on Saturday. Athletic hammered Maheno 64-0 scoring ten tries in the process while out at Enfield, unbeaten Valley downed Kurow 34-5 in a game to mark the Enfield rugby clubs fiftieth jubliee.

Valley moved to the top of the Citizens Shield rugby table with an 11 try, 74-10 drubbing of Maheno at Weston on Saturday. Excelsior and Athletic fought out a 12 all draw while Old Boys after a tough first half came away from Kurow in the second half for a 31-13 win.

Excelsior extended its winning streak to six for the season when in the first round of Citizens Shield rugby it beat Maheno 40-6 at Whitestone stadium on Saturday. In a seesaw struggle Valley edged out Old Boys at Weston Park, 28-25 and at Kurow Athletic held on to beat Kurow 22-19.

Excelsior took the Speights shield for 2009 by beating Valley ,19-15 in the combined North Otasgo/Dunedin premier two competition final played at Carisbrook on Saturday. Both sides produced strong defensive efforts with Excelsior scoring the only try in the first quarter when Excelsior first five eighth, Mike Mullins made a halfbreak from a lineout and flanker Inoke Finau was on his shoulder to score between the posts for halfback Jason Forrest to convert.
